Staycations have become increasingly popular in recent years, with British holidaymakers often staying in the UK rather than going abroad. Due to the current lockdown caused by coronavirus, people are having to take this one step further by remaining at home during spring and potentially summertime. But don’t let that put you off, as it’s actually very easy to have a fun, relaxing and memorable holiday at home, all while saving your pennies. Below are some examples of how to still have a proper break despite not being able to go very far.
Write an activity list
In the same way that you’d write a list of things you want to do whilst holidaying elsewhere, you can make one when you’re staying at home. This can be good fun in itself, as you and the family will most likely come up with some great activities that can be planned out over the course of a week or two.
Fire up the barbie
If you have a barbecue, now’s the perfect time to set it up and show it some attention. Whether you want to stick to a small budget or travel the world through flavour by ordering exotic meat and veg from an independent butcher, nothing beats grilling food just the way you like it. This is also a great way to get some fresh air, plus you may be lucky enough to get a tan if the sunny weather holds.
Take some virtual tours
Thanks to the wonders of digital innovation, there are all kinds of virtual tours available for you to experience. From the Grand Canyon and the northern lights, to a panoramic view of Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower and a helicopter pilot’s view of New York City, it’s well worth searching to see what’s on offer. If you love learning new things, you should definitely check out the virtual tour of Hull Streetlife Museum too.
Expand your horizons with books
There’s nothing better than having spare time to relax with a good book, so why not take this as an opportunity to find a good one on your shelves or buy one that you’ve always wanted to read? You could also take part in online writing competitions and free activities such as readathons, which encourage you to read more whilst making new friends through social media communities.
Explore the night sky
When was the last time you actually stopped and looked up at the stars? On a clear night you can see all sorts of celestial bodies from the comfort of your home or garden, plus you might even spot a shooting star or two. If you’re curious about what it is you’re looking out, we suggest downloading an app such as Google Sky Map or Stellarium, which point out planets and constellations and explains what they are.
Keep fit and healthy
Having a holiday at home doesn’t mean that you can’t stay active. In fact, since the lockdown there have been plenty of new fitness workouts launched online and through social media, from the extremely popular weekday workouts by The Body Coach that are perfect for all the family, to empowering sessions from YogaDownload.
Sleep the right amount
Did you know that humans are the only mammal that willingly delays sleep? It’s easy to watch just one more late-night episode on Netflix, but this can often have a huge effect on your energy levels, mood, concentration, brain power and general wellbeing the next day. However, it’s not a case of sleeping as much as possible, but rather getting the right amount and at a consistent time so that you wake up feeling refreshed and motivated.
